Have you ever wondered what is happening backstage to create the magic happening onstage? Or perhaps you’ve always wanted to help behind the scenes at a theater and meet interesting and fun people? Our volunteers make magic happen every day at Caledonia Community Players and are the heart of what we do. They make CCP a warm and welcoming place to get involved in our community while also giving back! CCP is presently in need of volunteers for our upcoming production in several following areas. Even if you don’t have theater experience, reach out and join us! We can train you & would be thrilled to get YOU involved!
AUDIENCE EXPERIENCE VOLUNTEERS
Our Audience Experience Team strives to create a safe and welcoming environment for all theatre-goers. Volunteers will be working under the guidance and direction of the House Manager. These volunteers are asked to arrive one hour prior to the start of the performance.
HOUSE VOLUNTEERS
House Volunteers (ushers, door, will call & concessions) are great ways to get started volunteering and meet lots of interesting people. Each night we need 6 volunteers to fill all areas. Report time is one hour prior to performance time and you need you to stay through the show to get everything set for the next performance. Helpers in these areas receive one complimentary ticket to stay & watch the show for free during the night of volunteering.
- Ushers – Our Ushers are responsible for welcoming guests, assisting patrons in accessing the virtual playbill, and ensuring that everyone is able to locate their seat with ease.
- Door Greeters– Our Greeters are stationed at entrances and they provide a warm welcome to all of our patrons and assist with door handling, directions, and general questions.
- Will-Call – Our Will-Call attendant assists patrons with picking up their tickets on the night of the performance from a table in the lobby.
- Concessions – Our Concessions volunteers assist in selling water, candy and snacks before the show and during intermission.
HOSPITALITY
This group of volunteers assists the Board of Directors and Cast with special events, opening night functions, lobby and events to honor CCP sponsors and volunteers. No experience necessary but need volunteers that can follow a checklist and have an eye for setting up nice looking tables, displays and details that make an event look professional and fun. Let us know if you are interested and we will put you on the list to call as events come up.
TECHNICAL SUPPORT VOLUNTEERS
SET CONSTRUCTION
Set construction volunteers help build, repair, paint, and tear down sets. It is helpful but. necessary for volunteers in this area to have some construction or painting background. These volunteers assist in constructing and painting the set. Carpenters: volunteers that work to actually assemble the wooden portions of the set. Painters: volunteers that paint the completed set. General hands: volunteers that are asked to assist in the above areas, and are often given special projects. Daytime and night hours are available.
PROP DESIGN
This position is part of the stage crew. Properties included every small article and set dressings used in a production, from a refrigerator to a pen- they’re all considered a valuable prop in the show! Props are crucial and include anything that is not an actor or part of the set. The props designer is responsible for finding, borrowing, buying and researching all hand props used by actors. Props designers work closely with Director to enhance the look of the show. One production meeting is normally required, the rest of the time commitment is flexible. You will be given a deadline when everything needs to be at the theatre, and can work on your own time.
DECK CREW
Each show requires a fast moving deck crew backstage to make things happen correctly on stage. Anywhere from 3 to 33 people can make up a deck crew and they have a great deal of fun but also responsibility. Responsibilities range from organizing and preparing the stage before a performance, preparing the set, coordinating special effects, bringing flys in and out, and moving set pieces in and out. Time commitment is the full run of the show and tech week. Volunteers can work every night of a production or trade shifts with another volunteer. The show can’t go on without deck crew… so committed volunteers are a necessity!
HAIR & MAKEUP
A Hair & Makeup director creates the makeup design and hairstyles for each show and then manages the makeup crew for each performance. Our cast is expected to do their own basic stage makeup (don’t worry, we’ll teach you how and its pretty cool!) but more elaborate makeup effects are done by various makeup artists (depending on the show). If you’d like to be part of the makeup crew, let us know.
COSTUMING
Costuming volunteers are instrumental in sewing costumes, as well as putting finishing touches on projects. Costumers assist the Costume Designer in constructing, hand finishing, and/or altering costumes for the current production. Volunteers sew, mend,embellish, organize, iron and clean costumes. It is helpful for the volunteer to have sewing experience but not necessary. CCP relies greatly on volunteers in the costume shop to either lead or assist in the costumes area. Time requirements vary by show, but hours are flexible with personal schedules. CCP offers daytime, evening and weekend hours sewing either at your home or backstage at CCP.
MUSICIANS
CCP are always in need of experienced musicians of all ages who have played in musical theater orchestra pit settings, can read musical scores, can help accompany at rehearsals and/or assist singers with learning their vocal parts at rehearsal. This person would report to the Music Director and be utilized in the orchestra pit if necessary.
